Common Core State Standards

Common Core State Standards (CCSS) are an updated set of curricular standards that have been developed with the intention of unifying curricula and standards across all 50 states. Schools in California will teach to these standards beginning with the 2014-15 school year. For more information click here EGUSD - Common Core State Standards .

For a summary of the CCSS in a short 3 minute video, please click on the following link CCSS Video .  This video was presented on our morning bulletin for all of our students to see.

Currently, the staff at Franklin High has been participating in professional development provided by the district, site, and outside programs to effectively assist in implementing these new standards.

In addition to CCSS, there will be a transition to a new testing called Smarter Balance which are aligned with CCSS.  This year only 10% of California schools were selected to pilot the Smarter Balance Assessments and Franklin High School was chosen.  The assessments that Franklin High students are taking are addressing the CCSS in math and English. We are testing over 700 students and their feedback is critical for Franklin High. It will give us an insight on the administration and rigor of these new assessments.

Youth Film Festival Judging - Community Service Opportunity

Do you like pizza?

Are you serious about film or animation?

Would you like a fun way to do community service hours over the summer?

Become a member of the jury to select films for the

17th Annual All Youth Film and Education Day

Who:  You are needed to volunteer to serve as a teen juror to judge other teen films from all over North America.

What:  You need to commit to attending half of the 12 judging sessions.  Each judging session will last five hours.  The dates, to be determined by those participating, will run from late July to mid-AugustFree pizza and soda are served – all you can eat.

Why:  You will have a chance to select films that will show at the film festival on October 4.  You can earn more than 40 hours of community service volunteering on this project.  You may also have a chance to help put on the film festival.  Judges can serve as hosts and can get a chance to meet the festival’s industry guest speaker.

Where:  the home of Dr. Bill Bronston

3711 Dell Road, Carmichael, CA 95608

This is about a 45 minute drive from Franklin High.  Ideally, you can arrange a car pool with other interested Franklin students.

Dr. Bronston is a retired medical doctor who has coordinated this event for 17 years.  He has a passionate commitment to developing youth media.  His father was Samuel Bronston, a noted film producer of big budget blockbusters in the 1960s.  (King of Kings, El Cid, Fall of the Roman Empire).

Every student from Franklin High that has attended over the years has reported that the experience was a lot of fun.  Students learn a lot about film as they watch and discuss what works and what doesn’t in various short movies.

How: Students discuss the merits of each film and then give it a score.  Later students group the films into to the order they will be shown at the theater.

Find out if this is something you want to do:

Attend the Introductory meeting at Dr. Bronston’s house on Friday, July 26  - 7:00-9:30 p.m. Parents are welcome to attend.

Feel free to call Dr. Bronston at (916) 944-0100 if you have any questions.  He is glad to answer any of your questions.
